Why become a Rape Crisis Program Summer Intern?
Summer Interns will:
- complete an intensive initial Victim Advocate training
program;
- provide crisis
intervention counseling and medical & legal advocacy for
survivors of sexual assault;
- will work closely with
the Assistant Director to develop specific internship goals and
learning plans based upon their individual interests; and
- gain knowledge about careers in psychology and social work
by participating in their choice of a variety of in-house Summer
Intern workshops (topics include advanced counseling skills,
child therapy, offender psychology and treatment, sexual assault
prevention programming for children and adults, criminal justice
issues and forensics, substance abuse, etc.)
and off-site opportunities (ex: Interns may choose to learn more
about local cultural diversity by attending such events as the
Native American “Keeping the Traditions” Powwow; visit a maximum
security prison; attend a trial involving a sexual assault case;
etc.).
NOTE: The 2004 Summer Internship class activity list is
not yet finalized. However, you may be interested in checking out our
past Summer
Intern Activity pages to get a better idea about the
kinds of opportunities the program provides.
What is the
required time commitment?
All interns must complete the Rape Crisis Program Victim
Advocate training class. Summer Interns spend approximately
twelve hours per week over twelve weeks working with the Rape
Crisis Program (leaving plenty of time for taking classes, summer
jobs, etc.). Scheduling is very flexible to allow for vacations,
etc.
